Adoption is a legal process that permanently transfers parental rights from birth parents to adoptive parents. It means taking a child into your home as a permanent family member. It means caring for and guiding children through their growing years and giving them the love and understanding they need to develop to their full potential. Social workers counsel birth parents that are voluntarily considering adoption for their born or unborn child, make referrals to assist them in their decision, and provide relinquishment services. Social workers also evaluate adoptive homes for placing children, some of who are dependents of the Juvenile Court and are unable to be returned to their biological parents. Many of the children have special needs, may be older or part of a sibling group.
